19 decembris 2016 - 16:56

On 15 November 2016, the European Commission's Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO) organised a side event during COP22 on the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The side event highlighted the actions of over 20 African mayors as inspiring examples to lead the way for local governments in the continent to address the triple challenge of energy access, climate change mitigation and adaptation. The first pilot cities presented their plans to be developed within the Covenant of Mayors, their proposed actions for implementing climate and energy objectives in Sub-Saharan cities and reiterated their wish to be part of this initiative.

All participants were invited to join mayors, city networks and the European Commission and discuss the commitments under the Covenant of Mayors in Sub Saharan Africa. Among the panelists were representatives from the cities of Kampala (Uganda), Tsévié (Togo), Zou (Benin), Nouakchott (Mauritania), Dakar (Senegal), Lubumbashi (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Bouaké (Ivory Coast). Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica emphasized the importance of the bottom-up approach of this initiative.

  • Started in 2011 with the opening of a Covenant Office for Eastern Europe and South Caucasus, the geographical extension of the Covenant of Mayors has continued ever since. Click here to learn more!
