In 2019, a total of 34 Covenant Signatories in the Province of Alicante took advantage of the call launched by the Province (Covenant Coordinator) to receive support in the development of their Reference Emissions Inventories, Sustainable Energy Action Plans and Monitoring Reports.
Through this program, about 30.000 euros were provided by the provincial institution to collaborate with the municipalities and help them reach the Covenant of Mayors targets: decrease their carbon dioxide emissions by 20% by 2020 thanks to a 20% reduction of energy consumption (savings and energy efficiency) and the 20% of energy consuption coming from renewable sources.
The representative in charge of the Environment, Miguel Ángel Sánchez, stressed that "The Diputación de Alicante promotes the adhesion of our municipalities to the Covenant and help them in the planning and development of the commitments they've signed up to." In this sense, the Province has worked with Altea in the preparation of a preliminart study to establish the necessary adaptation measures. It has also conducted follow-up studies fo the municipalities of Ibi, Novelda, Tàrbena and Teulada.
